What is Frontier Marketing?

Frontier Marketing is the strategic discipline of building today for the marketing environment that is coming next.

Frontier Marketing is the strategic discipline of building today for the marketing environment that is coming next.

Today, that means preparing organisations for the 2030 marketing environment, where discovery, interpretation, comparison and recommendation are increasingly mediated by AI systems and agents.

Definition

Frontier Marketing is the strategic discipline of building today for the marketing environment that is coming next.

The definition is deliberately independent of any particular technology or date. 2030 is the current strategic horizon of Frontier Marketing, not part of its permanent definition. When the horizon moves, the discipline remains the same: building today for the marketing environment that is coming next.

Expanded definition

Frontier Marketing combines resilient strategy, resilient value propositions, entity design, retrievability, agentic ecosystems, compounding go-to-market systems and continuous frontier exploration.

Each of those elements is documented as a layer of the Frontier Marketing framework, and each has a canonical definition in the glossary.

Why the discipline exists

Marketing practice has been organised for decades around a relatively stable structure: recognisable channels, recognisable intermediaries, and campaigns whose performance could be optimised inside that structure. That structure is changing. Frontier Marketing exists because the useful unit of planning is shifting from the campaign to the organisation's capacity to remain relevant while the environment keeps moving.

The changing role of intermediation

Intermediation is the work of connecting a buyer with an answer. Historically that work was distributed across search engines, directories, retailers, analysts, media and salespeople. Language models and agents now perform a growing share of it: they find, summarise, compare and recommend on the buyer's behalf. Frontier Marketing treats this as a structural change in how markets work, not as a new advertising channel.

AI-mediated discovery

Frontier Marketing defines AI-mediated discovery as the situation in which a person reaches an answer through a model or an agent rather than by browsing sources directly. In that situation, the organisation is represented by whatever the system can retrieve and reconstruct about it, which is rarely the same as the organisation's own marketing narrative.

Retrievability

Frontier Marketing defines retrievability as an organisation's capacity to be found, correctly understood, distinguished and recommended by humans, search systems, language models and autonomous agents. Retrievability replaces visibility as the operative objective, because being displayed is no longer the same as being understood.

Agentic AI

Agentic AI describes systems that can pursue a goal across several steps, use tools and act on behalf of a user or an organisation. Frontier Marketing treats agents as two things at once: participants in the market that must be able to interpret the organisation, and organisational capability that changes what a marketing function can do.

Resilient strategy

A resilient strategy is one that stays useful when tactics expire. It names where the organisation competes, for whom, and why it should remain relevant. Frontier Marketing subordinates tactical choices to that layer so that adopting a new capability does not require rebuilding the organisation's direction.

Compounding capability

GTM Compounding is the design of go-to-market components so that they exchange data, learning, audiences, signals, assets and intelligence. The objective is accumulated capability rather than isolated campaign output.

Continuous exploration

Continuous Frontier Exploration is the systematic detection, evaluation, testing and adoption of emerging capabilities relevant to the organisation. It is a governed routine, not opportunistic experimentation.

Who developed this Frontier Marketing framework?

The Frontier Marketing framework documented on frontiermarketing.org is developed by Jordi Marca, a marketing strategist and founder of Gotoclient.

The phrase “Frontier Marketing” has also been used in other contexts by other authors and organisations. This website documents one specific framework and does not claim ownership of, or priority over, every use of the phrase.

Frontier Marketing in one paragraph

  • Frontier Marketing is a strategic discipline, not a campaign methodology.
  • Its object is the organisation's capacity to remain relevant as the market structure changes.
  • Its current horizon is the 2030 marketing environment.
  • Its documented implementation has seven layers and ten propositions.
