Retrievability

Retrievability is an organisation's capacity to be found, correctly understood, distinguished and recommended by humans, search systems, language models and autonomous agents.

Definition

Retrievability is an organisation's capacity to be found, correctly understood, distinguished and recommended by humans, search systems, language models and autonomous agents.

Frontier Marketing uses retrievability instead of visibility because being displayed is no longer equivalent to being understood. A model that summarises a market does not look at a page; it reconstructs an account of the organisation from what it can retrieve.

The four components of retrievability

Findability

Findability is whether the organisation's material can be reached at all: crawlable URLs, server-rendered HTML, stable addresses, an accurate sitemap, and no dependence on JavaScript execution or login to read core content. Findability is necessary and never sufficient.

Interpretability

Interpretability is whether a reader or a system can correctly state what the organisation does, for whom and why. It depends on self-contained sentences, consistent terminology, explicit definitions and structured data that matches the visible text.

Distinguishability

Distinguishability is whether the organisation can be told apart from adjacent entities with similar names, categories or claims. It depends on precise differentiation and on entity architecture: stable identifiers, explicit relationships and disambiguating context.

Recommendability

Recommendability is whether the organisation is a defensible answer to a specific question. It depends on evidence, corroboration by independent sources, and a claim narrow enough that recommending it is justifiable. No optimisation guarantees inclusion or recommendation by any search system or language model; retrievability improves the conditions, it does not purchase the outcome.

How retrievability relates to SEO, GEO and structured data

SEO concerns discovery and ranking in search engines and remains a contributing capability. GEO, Generative Engine Optimisation, concerns how organisations are represented in generated answers. Structured data expresses entities and relationships in a machine-readable form. Entity architecture makes those relationships coherent across the whole site. Content supplies the statements that can be quoted. Citations and authority supply external corroboration. AI retrieval is the process that consumes all of it.

In Frontier Marketing these are not competing disciplines. They are contributing capabilities inside a single objective: that the organisation's meaning survives the journey through a retrieval system.

What improving retrievability looks like in practice

Publish canonical definitions as visible HTML. Keep one term for one concept. Give each concept a permanent URL and an anchor. Make structured data agree with the visible page. Cite real sources and make them crawlable links. Monitor how models describe the organisation, and treat systematic misdescription as a defect in the material rather than a failure of the model.
